Activities

What is SVVT?

The Women Translators and Interpreters Network ('SVVT') was originally part of Stichting Vrouwennetwerk Nederland, a foundation established in 1980 to support self-employed women and professional women in positions of responsibility and to encourage their professional development.

Various sector and regional groups, including the Women Translators and Interpreters Network, were soon set up under the umbrella of the national network. Although we elected after some 20 years to leave the national network (which has since been disbanded), our objective continues to be to support and encourage women in their professional careers. Our guiding principle is that everyone should contribute to and benefit from the network. Our members' knowledge and experience is a reservoir that we can all draw from, but to which we should also all contribute our knowledge and experience. In order to make sure that members' contributions are of equal value, we have certain entry requirements (see Memberships Rules).

Our meetings are held every two months and are normally in Dutch. The general meeting, where we have a speaker and then a buffet supper, is followed by the individual language section meetings. The Interpreters' Section meets beforehand so that its members can also attend the individual language sections. In January, we welcome in the New Year and no section meetings are held.

What can SVVT offer?

Close network of colleagues

The members of our network are there to help each other and can draw on each other's knowledge and experience. We list our members' languages and the subjects in which they specialise in our Who's Who.

At our meetings, members can discuss and exchange ideas with each other in a friendly, informal setting. Our members are of various different nationalities and have wide-ranging backgrounds. They include freelancers and also translators and interpreters working for public and private-sector employers and translation agencies.

Expanding our knowledge

The various speakers at our meetings talk on a wide range of subjects relating to translating and interpreting. We also organise activities, either on our own or with other groups, focusing on specific issues of interest to our profession. Discussions at the individual language section meetings have included reference books, terminology, computer equipment, useful software, internet sites and a wide range of tips from day-to-day practice. Members can also consult each other via the various e-mail circles.

Assignments

Although developing contacts for potential assignments is not normally the primary reason for joining SVVT, members looking to pass on work generally prefer to look within our own network first.
